Uploading Documents

Add academic papers, reports, and research documents to your Virza library.

How to upload

There are three ways to upload documents:

Drag and drop

Drag one or more files from your computer directly onto the Virza library view. A drop zone will appear.

Upload button

Click the Upload button in the top bar and select files from your computer.

Bulk upload

Select multiple files at once using either method. Virza processes them all in parallel.

File size limits depend on your plan. Free: 10 MB / 50 pages, Starter: 15 MB / 75 pages, Pro: 25 MB / 150 pages, Team: 100 MB / 500 pages, Enterprise: 500 MB / 5,000 pages. See Upload Limits for full details.

What happens after upload

File is uploaded

Your document is securely uploaded and stored in your workspace.

Automatic parsing begins

Virza runs your document through an intelligent parsing pipeline:

  1. Text extraction: The full text is extracted from the PDF
  2. Metadata detection: Title, authors, abstract, publication date, DOI, and journal are identified
  3. Citation extraction: References are parsed into structured citations
  4. Section detection: Introduction, methods, results, discussion, etc.

Search indexing

Once parsed, the document is indexed for full-text search and semantic search. This typically takes under 30 seconds.

AI features activate

After indexing, you can chat with the document, generate summaries, and explore AI insights.

Tips

  • Upload early, organize later: Get everything into Virza first, then sort into collections
  • PDF works best: PDF papers from journals and arXiv give the best parsing results
  • Check metadata: After upload, verify the extracted title and authors are correct. You can edit them by clicking the metadata panel.
